For the past 20 years or so they have paid a per starter fee to the Jockey's Guild. The unwtritten understanding is that the payment was in return for the jockeys's media rights although it has never been determined in a court whether or not the jockeys actually owned the rights to their likeness which the track broadcasts 9 times dailey across the country and world. It may be understandable that in lean times the payments be suspended until profitability returned, but when the money starts flowing in from the VLTs, will NYRA do the right thing in regards to the jockeys?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8711985.post-17118613697407743462008-04-01T15:38:00.000-04:002008-04-01T15:38:00.000-04:00You should get an Eclipse Award.great job!!Larry B...You should get an Eclipse Award.
great job!!

Larry Brooks would be proud of you.

Or as Ed McMahon would say "Everything you could possibly want to know about the NYRA situation is in this web blog"

theimanAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8711985.post-31595086426072563092008-03-31T18:57:00.000-04:002008-03-31T18:57:00.000-04:00Hayward doesn't mention that NYRA is getting 17% +...Hayward doesn't mention that NYRA is getting 17% +/- from the New York City OTBs simulcasts. They should develop a program for raising simulcast rates to satellite wagering providers incrementally over 3 or 4 years.

What they absolutely should not do--while acknowledging fully that the problem is in their business model--is make lame attempts to recoup that revenue through takeout increases on the bettors.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8711985.post-74771176673964012602008-03-31T13:19:00.000-04:002008-03-31T13:19:00.000-04:00Alan, dittos on the great interviewwith Charlie Ha...Alan, dittos on the great interview
with Charlie Hayward and your expansion of it into a detailed story on the NYRA situation. A confirmation of what so many of us have been saying all along: The NYRA business model has hampered NYRA from doing business and making a profit. Now, if those dim bulbs in Albany could only be persuaded to read your post "NYRA's Path To Profit" then we might stand a chance to change some minds. The general media have failed miserably in reporting this story, mainly because it takes a lot of effort and interest to understand a complex business subject, so the general media just cops out and spins the story with NYRA as the bad guy. I think Steve Crist should hire you to do regular in-depth reporting on NYRA and NY racing as a service to the racing industry! /S/Green Mtn PunterAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8711985.post-79937786316139008362008-03-31T13:13:00.000-04:002008-03-31T13:13:00.000-04:001. This is NYRA's face to the public and it is not pretty. The SAM machines have more charm.

2. NYRA Rewards. My new NYRA rewards account makes me one of NYRA's most profitable customers. The rewards program does not reflect it. I was getting better rebates from my Connecticut OTB phone account.

Overall, a great interview. NYRA has their work cut out for them from many years of neglect in many areas. While there seem to be improvements not sure all is cured but willing to be optimistic.

Sure wish he would not be so quick to write off the on track patrons.

This is a big metropolitan area and a tourist destination (some of whom come from countries where racing is embraced), and with the proper marketing and facilities upgrade he should be able to draw at least on weekends.

Many travelers enjoy gambling while on vacation, and NYC has no such venue. All it would take is a little effort and presence in the NYC hotels.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8711985.post-40983007151819726782008-03-31T08:39:00.000-04:002008-03-31T08:39:00.000-04:00wow, great interview, possibly the best column you...wow, great interview, possibly the best column you've ever written, and one of the best articles I've ever read, this shit should have been super boring, but i read every last word for what reason I don't know, you get the credit.Patrick J Pattenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10365169347148710377noreply@blogger.com
