The Jinx Continues

The Racing Form is reporting that juvenile champ Stevie Wonderboy is out of the Derby with a hairline condylar fracture to his front right foot, thus continuing the streak of the BC Juvenile winner not winning the Kentucky Derby. Owner Merv Griffin said, "He's out of the Derby. It's the saddest thing in my life."

I know he must be terribly disappointed, but all in all, I guess that Merv must be having a pretty good life.

In re Stevie Wonderboy, another Derby Trail casualty, it's getting to be ridiculous. Seriously, isn't it time to start a Derby Doesn't- Get- In - The Starting Gate Future Book?! And it won't stop until we get over this obsession with winning the Kentucky Derby! The Derby is just one race on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs! So what?! I just read the Jay Hovdy biography of Charlie Whittingham and was reminded why he is my all-time favorite trainer (along with Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons). Charlie was 73 before he won his first Derby! Why? Because he felt 95% of these barely 3 year olds could not hold up to the rigors of 3 tough races in 5 weeks, before their bones were fully mature, and every year that goes by proves him right! Charlie wanted them around- and winning big purse money- when they were 4, 5, 6, 7, and occasionally older! "The horse will tell you when he's ready", was Charlie's mantra, and great words of wisdom they have proven to be!
