- Sean Avery, the hockey player, is gone. He signed a four-year deal with the Dallas Stars, for just under the $4 million a year he was looking for. Sean Avery in Texas for four years? Ha. I don't think he'll make it through half of that contract, and he may very well once again wear Broadway Blue, in time for the 2009-10 playoffs.
Sean Avery, the horse, makes his debut in the 4th at Belmont on Thursday. He's a two-year old son of Cherokee Run, who stands for Darley at $40,000 a pop, out of a Forest Wildcat mare. Unlike his feisty namesake, this Sean Avery has not appreciated in value; Darley sold him for $10,000 less than the stud fee. He's 6-1 morning line for trainer Allen Iwinski.
To prevent any trouble, the State Racing and Wagering Board issued its own version of the Sean Avery Rule:
"A disqualification will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when a horse positions itself facing an opponent and engages in actions such as waving his hooves or the jockey in front of a horse's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the horse as opposed to attempting to win the race."Sean Avery, the horse, had no comment.

Avery the hockey player is over rated. It pains me to say it was a good move by Sather letting him go.
jk - I agree and disagree. I don't think he's overrated....at least for the games that he shows up to play. I do think though that he's the type of guy you don't want to keep around too long. So I'm in the minority of Ranger fans who has no problem with Sather letting him go.
Love the pun!
