Friday Morning Notes - Jan 6

- When Funny Cide goes to the post in Saturday’s Mr. Prospector Handicap at Gulfstream, he will become the first Kentucky Derby winner to race at 6 since Gato del Sol, the 1982 winner, ran twice in 1985. [Daily Racing Form]

- Reading about Stevie Wonderboy’s six furlong work in 1:12 3/5 on Thursday (“he galloped out in 1:25 [seven furlongs] and 1:39 [a mile]”), his final tuneup before next Saturday’s San Rafael at Santa Anita, I’m reminded of his last workout before he won the Juvenile.

Stevie Wonderboy went so easily under exercise rider Sal Santiago that clockers designated the work as breezing, which is rarely given in Southern California. Only 3 of the 119 horses who worked at Hollywood on Thursday were considered breezing. [DRF]
You may recall similar comments about the 46 second half mile drill before the Breeders’ Cup. At that time, Doug O’Neill said: "Visually, he looked like he was going at a 12-second clip (for an eighth). I was amazed to look at my watch and see what he was doing." So I guess he’s ready.

- The injury that has landed Joe Bravo in a Florida hospital is apparently the most serious in a bizarre string of injuries that has plagued the rider over the last few years after riding injury free for most of his career. His agent Doug Mellul said: "He fractured T8 and T9, the vertebrae that are basically right across from your sternum, and they haven't been able to give us a timeframe as far as recovery goes. It'll definitely be a while.” [Bloodhorse] His most recent prior injury was the broken collarbone he suffered at Monmouth in July from which he returned in September. He fractured a vertabrae in his neck back on opening night at the Meadowlands in 2003.

Redskins @ 18/1 Hmmmmmm....On 2nd thought, they have to win 3 on the road to get there huh? Naaa...that just doesn't happen.
Although in 1985 the Pats were the Wild Card and Won 3 str. road G's to get to SB XX.w/ the infamous Tony Eason leading the charge.
We all remember what the '85 Bears did to him. I'll never forget that one. I had a 20 X'r on the Pats +10 1/2...They scored 1st w/ a FG and were up 3-0. "Oh Yeah!!!...here comes an easy $100" I said. 45 Chi Bear points later...the Pats got a freebie TD at the end of the game to make it 45-10. My 10 1/2 pts. was a bit short.. Had to wait 15 yrs. to get that one back vs. the St.L Lambs @ +14.

Talking Horses...I had a depressing experience Weds. I'm @ LGP watching simulcast when Joe Bravo went down. This guy yells out,"I hope he breaks his leg and is gone for the year" "He's worthless anyway" Man..that pissed me off. I don't care if a jockey is 0 for 200 and you had bet every one of them. Joe Bravo is still someones son/husband/father..It's just WRONG to say that shit. I sure we've all said "Aaaa..that jockey SUCKS" but to wish bodily harm?? LOOOOW CLASS. I was surprised because this guy is a respected player. He knows his shit. I've spoken to him briefly to try to gain some insight but he's not very forthcoming or sociable. I'm OK with that...he's 'capping his ponies and doesn't need a rookie like me distracting him and picking his brain. Although a couple weeks ago he did tip me off to a $31 winner that Randal Toups was on @ AQU 'cuz he knew I liked Toupsie from when he was @ C D. So while I highly respect his 'capping skills, he's a Low class individual Id rather not associate with. He's a arrogant bastard too..he's always flipping the channels on the Big screen TV's to see the races HE wants to watch...fuck anyone else. Just because he's there every day and bets a lot doesn't entitle him to run the lounge. It's a PUBLIC room,,not his. His pals are cool tho..I tipped them off to the "Donato Juggernaut" so they think I know something about horses. Ha ha..that thought should change soon enough!

T-man
P.S.. Big gambling raid in Prov.R.I. this week. Dozens rounded up and tons of $$$$ confiscated.
I hope I get paid tonight. I can almost hear it now,"T-man I'm sorry man..my boys got nailed and I can't pay you" For all the gray hairs I added sweating out my games, I need the cash for a dye job!!
