- Someone just emailed me today to ask if I'd heard anything about Bellamy Road. The last report was that he'd start in July at Calder. Now comes word that he's gone directly from training for his return to standing stud at Hurricane Hall, without even bothering to pass go and retire, or so it seems. It's no surprise; the horse had recorded a single three furlong workout of 40 seconds since retreating to the care of Steinbrenner's racing manager Ed Sexton.
Those of us who were at the Big A for his Wood will never forget his race that day. As impressive as Bernardini has been, I can't say that I was more blown away by either of his Saratoga wins than I was by Bellamy Road's Wood. (Discreet Cat may be a different story.) If things had gone right, the two could have met in the Classic, and that would have been pretty cool...and too much for us to ask.
But they'll still be some good horses in the Classic (we hope!), and Haskin checks in on the Breeders' Cup picture on Bloodhorse.com. He notes that the three weeks between the Champagne and the Juvenile is not to the liking of Todd Pletcher, and that it's possible neither Hopeful (gr. I) winner Circular Quay nor runner-up Scat Daddy will run in the one-mile race around one turn.
