Wednesday Night Notes - March 1

- So what exactly did happen to Discreet Cat, the son of the now-record setting sire Forestry, who was purchased and whisked off by Godolphin after his maiden win at Saratoga that earned a 106 Beyer? All the available intelligence said that he was in the Middle East; in fact, the Downey Profile received a message on December 22 that read: "With regard to your enquiry, we can confirm that Discreet Cat is currently in Dubai with the rest of the Godolphin horses. There are no specific race plans for him at this time."

Hmmm, he’s not in this article from the Form about Godolphin’s “heavy artillery” at Dubai. (In fact, none of their five Derby nominees will run in Thursday night’s Al Bastakiya, a prep for the UAE Derby, including Henny Hughes.) And a search of “Discreet Cat” on the Dubai International Racing Carnival blog turns up the result: Sorry, no posts matched your criteria.

Well, let’s see, maybe under here...

They must have spent a lot of money on the colt, but at least they didn’t get stuck with a $16 million two-year old. Remember that Discreet Cat was reported to have had shin problems before and after his maiden win, and it seems as if all is not well.

- Lawyer Ron’s trainer says that trainers shipping in to Oaklawn for the Rebel better be ready. “Those guys shipping in here, they might be in for a surprise because this track is a very dead racetrack,” [Bob] Holthus said. “Horses better be pretty damn fit.” [Arkansas Democrat Gazette]

...best place to check on Godolphin horses is the Godolphin website, which has a "Latest News" section, and also a "Horses in Training" section which lists all Godolphin-owned horses...just click on that, and then the horse's name, and a window will pop up with a summary from Timeform...i did this recently with Discreet Cat, and while it offered no recent news about the horse, it did include the comment "will stay up to 7 furlongs"...i kinda got a kick out of that... 8^)

That's pretty funny. Don't think they shelled out that money for seven furlongs. How many furlongs you think they figure that their other somewhat more expensive Forestry colt will stay?
