- OK, been a busy 48 hours, as I try to get some NYC summer culture in before packing up for Saratoga. But time for a quick update before I head out to today's twilight card at Belmont.
Highland Cat is NOT running tomorrow. Bill Turner decided against entering him because, and I quote: the horse wasn't quite right, a euphemism for trainer's intuition, since there was nothing physical that Bill could specifically point to.
Hmmm. Maybe he doesn't like the heat? It's been at least six weeks now since his rousing second place finish. Turner will take him out on the track tomorrow, and if he looks OK, he'll be entered in a 45K maiden claimer on the grass on Wednesday. Probably a better spot for him than the maiden special anyway.
- Check this out: Pletcher has 12 horses entered to run in stakes this weekend, most of them favorites or second choices, in 10 stakes races at six different tracks.
- Barbaro slept on his side last night, and Dr. Richardson told the AP that he's doing "much better" today. That will probably be a disappointment to this moron.

...there's a 2yo filly entered in Race 4 @ Belmont today named Cherokee Sheik that drilled a furlong in 10 seconds at the OBS under-tack show in March...her worktab is somewhat sporadic, with drills on July 1, June 20, June 14, amnd June 1...all on the Saratoga training track, all slow...5/1 on the morning line...i'm a bit worried about the worktab, particularly the fact that she only has one work in the last 24 days...but who knows, maybe she trained on a farm or something prior to today's race...this type of horse is an automatic bet for me...win or lose, you watch, she's gonna show keen speed...these under-tack stars always do...they don't always get there, but they win more than their fair share...and this one should be a bit of a price, i'd expect...wish me luck...
...Cherokee Sheik went off @ 6/1 and ran a decent 4th (though not showing as much speed as i expected), and never threatened the runaway winner Magical Ride...huge effort by that one, who got the half in 44 and change and hit the wire in a low 57...
...btw, here's a comment by Dave Liftin in the charts that i found pretty funny...
Out of Gwedda ran 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:06.66, and will "probably run back in the Saratoga Special (Aug. 17)," Pletcher said. Soaring By ran the same distance in 1:04.93, but time comparisons are tricky at best, because the track slowed noticeably throughout the day, particularly for the final three dirt races (7-9).
Gee, that's fine Dave, except that Out of Gwedda ran in Race 3 and Soaring By ran in Race 5. He makes it sound as if it were the other way around.
Incidentally, Alan had mentioned that Soaring By received a 99 Beyer, the highest by any 2yo this year. I asked what EZ Warrior had received for the Hollywood Juvenile, and the results are in. He got a 92.
