- With the Feb 13 deadline looming more ominously than either of the previous two, Mike Luzzi comments on the ongoing saga:
"The thing that is most disappointing to me is everyone knew the date: Dec. 31," said jockey Mike Luzzi, 38, who has ridden in New York since 1994. "We have known that date for being the deadline for such a long time. The trainers and owners and jockeys and people who work for NYRA, we just want to know what's going on. It's like all the talk about steroids in baseball. Enough. We're tired of it, already." [Albany Times Union]

Luzzi's comments make for good drama, but I wonder what his solution to the franchise debacle is, or how we should deal with steroid abuse, not only baseball but horse racing?
I think what really angers many in the NY racing industry at this point is the continued unwillingness of our public servants, i.e., the executive and legislative branches, to do their duty. They've played the blame game long enough and in fact have no excuse other than their willingness and desire to play poker with NY racing being the chips. It's just ridiculous, isn't it? Are you now ready to call the Gov and Joe Bruno? If enough of you irate horsepeople (and taxpayers) called, the squeaky wheel may get some grease before hell freezes over. It's a helluva way to run a major NY enterprise, isn't it? And you want these same people running your health care?! Those very same people who will turn around and again blame NY racing for losing money, yes, those people. /S/Green Mtn Punter
Luzzi is a 100% correct. Of course he is frustrated and has every right to be. The state is screwing this up. They can't do anything on-time.
What a crew of greedy politicians.
