Nice To Be Him

- Must be nice to be Steve Asmussen these days. Curlin is over in Dubai poised to add a few million to his bankroll on Saturday; and his latest workout was described as "perfect." Back home, his Derby favorite Pyro drilled five furlongs at Keeneland in 1:02 2/5, a work the trainer described on the Keeneland website as "excellent."

With regular exercise rider Dominic Terry aboard, Pyro recorded fractions of :26 2/5, :38 4/5, :50 4/5 and 1:02 2/5, galloping out six furlongs in 1:15 2/5.
Check it out; that was an eighth in 11 3/5 to the five furlongs. You can watch an excerpt of Pyro's workout here in an odd video that spends more time showing Asmussen looking self-satisfied than on the horse actually working. But the trainer certainly has a lot to be self-satisfied about theses days.

With the Dubai Classic perhaps other readers have found it listed elsewhere, but will it be aired in the US? ABC Sports carried it when Invasor ran last year. No such deal on ABC this time. ESPN didn't promote it (as one would expect) when at Turfway on Saturday.

I'm thinking *at best* it might be shown as a replay during the Florida Derby 1-hour coverage on ESPN2 this Saturday.

(HRTV might have it but considering they at best have 1/2 the reach of TVG they aren't reaching the masses)

It seems like a public relations fumble by the NTRA to not have at least obtained an internet feed right on their website - or something.

Is this not 2008 or have we gone back to the days of Citation when at best either you're at the track or listening on the radio?

I don't see any notation regarding any TV coverage on the NTRA home page. The only days they have listed for ESPN are the Florida Derby, the Blue Grass/Arkansas Derby/Holy Bull on April 12, and the who-cares Lexington the following week. Nothing is listed for the Wood or Santa Anita Derby. Is it possible that those races aren't scheduled to be televised?? Actually, we USED to be able to at least listen to races on the radio....not anymore as far as I know.

Actually there is both the Horse Racing Radio Network (HRRN) out of Lexington and also Thoroughbred Racing Radio Network (TRRN). I met one of the broadcasters for HRRN last year when we both flew into Albany for the Travers Stakes.

The above link goes to their main page. They're on Sirius but you can also click on a link (upper left corner below the Sirius logo] to live streaming on the internet. It's doubtful they'll have someone in Dubai.

As for a better TV schedule listing (instead of the NTRA) try this one from the DRF:

On TV - Racing

The Dubai card will be on HRTV. Seems that awhile back HRTV was hinting about a deal with DirecTV.

That's why I nave Dish Network...
