Fast Track

- I’m just scanning some of the links today and see things like Bellamy Road Isn’t a Sure Bet, and Favorite No Sure Bet in Loaded Field, Derby Favorite Remains Unproven, and Bellamy Road may be Dead End. Steve Cauthen doesn’t like him. No one on TVG seems to like him; in fact some are dismissing him to finishing up the track. Afleet Alex is favored in all the pools thus far, could it be that he will really be favored? Bellamy Road is now down to 5-2; Afleet Alex 4-1. One guy who has no doubt about Bellamy Road is the NY Post’s Ed Fountaine.

That's two of five Derby-winning favorites, so the pendulum is swinging the other way. Look for Bellamy Road to break like a shot, run Spanish Chestnut into the ground by the time they reach the track kitchen, at which point Castellano will drop his hands a bit, signaling Bellamy Road the time has come. Given his head, the big black stallion will lengthen his lead with gigantic, effortless strides to take home the first jewel of a long-elusive prize that will culminate when The Boss hoists aloft the Triple Crown trophy at Belmont Park five weeks away. [NY Post]

Well, I guess the track is fast. Wildcat Shoes zipped a half in :43 4/5 en route to a win in 1:08 flat.

Frank Lyons keeps killing off Afleet Alex's breeder when he tells the story of the lemonade stand and all that. In fact, as I posted a couple of days ago, he's defied his doctors' prognoses and is still alive and at the race today.

I like this jewel from the Haskin

One very telling gallop this morning was the one turned in by Wilko, who was as strong as I've seen him by far. The second time around, he was almost running off with the rider, whose arms were fully extended in an attempt to control him. For such a small horse (he looks to be barely 15 hands, tops), he is amazingly strong. He definitely is one horse who is crawling out of his skin, and all signs point to him running the race of his life tomorrow.

I'm liking Wilko for some board action. Maybe not chalk, but up there and his odds are making him a good buy...hopefully not a goodbye.
