- Highland Cat was bumped sideways a couple of times coming out of the gate, and was driven very wide in the early stages. Truth is, he probably would have found himself in a similar position early regardless. These were quick horses; or at least the runaway winner Mend was. He put away Skip Along Jet with consecutive quarters of 22.6, and finished up in 1:10.19; the feature went in 1:10.44. It's reported that Highland Cat galloped out well, and passed "a lot" of horses after an additional 3/16ths.
The best news of all is the condition book, which contains, on April 18, a $35,000 claiming race on the turf for non-winners of two lifetime. That's what I'm talking about! It's like they wrote the race just for him! It's five weeks from today; he should be fit and fresh and ready to go on his favorite surface.
