Welcome Barron's Readers

- If you’re coming via Barron’s, thanks for stopping by. If you’re looking for a winner in the Derby, I like Bob and John, but I’d strongly advise you to seek other opinions as well. I do pick a winner here once in a while, but I didn’t call it Left at the Gate because I consider myself an authority. I’m just trying to teach myself here, really. It's gratifying when I hear from readers who say they're learning along with me, and edifying when they are nice enough to take the time to comment or write in order to set me straight when necessary. And sometimes, I calmly express my opinion on things mostly related to horse racing. So thanks again for coming, and please also check out these other fine bloggers (and these too), all of whom share the kind of passion for our great game that only true track degenerates can. Enjoy.

...Barbaro, ugh...no soup for me...

...Cause to Believe finished 13th, good enough to win 2-out-of-3 matchups...the trifecta tickets went right in the garbage though...

...A.P. Warrior ran inexplicably bad, 18th i think...damn...

...Sinister Minister wasn't on the lead?...wow...the surprise leader Keyed Entry faded back to last...now THAT was predicatble...

...deep closers Steepenwolfer and Jazil each finished near the top of the field...guess i was wrong about CTB being the best of that bunch... 8^P

...Brother Derek didn't do too poorly, though he never threatened...i believe he finished 5th...good enough to beat Lawyer Ron in that matchup... 8^)

...in closing, ANOTHER terrible Derby for me...hard as i try, i never can get this race right...i did make money on matchups (as i generally do), but i lost FIVE TIMES that amount on assorted futures, going back to the beginning of the year...i also lost money on a trifecta key, hoping Cause to Believe would hit the board and light up the toteboard...i guess that honor went to Bluegrass Cat...i can only hope you guys did a lot better than i did... 8^(

Thanks Walter, even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while. The Derby is always the toughest race to handicap. Luck in the draw and the trip plays such a big part. Nick

You know what has really got to scare the competition where Barbaro is concerned. Forget the fact that he destroyed that field, what was supposed to be his biggest downfall, not racing but once in 13 weeks, now becomes his biggest asset. In years past there is always the fresh horse waiting in the wings to take on the Derby winner in the Preakness. A Derby winner that has had a hard campaign to get to and thru the Derby. The fresh horse this year is the Derby winner. And with his tactical speed that forwardly places him in a race, his ability to seemingly handle all kinds of tracks, theres no real reason to think that this horse wont repeat in the Preakness. Todd Pletcher remarked how he galloped out after the finish line, going as far to say that the Belmont mile and half should'nt be a problem for Barbaro. High praise from a true authorative source.A lot of industry people are eating their words this morning. Mike Watchmaker in particular, damning Matz for the 5 week layoff had become a mantra for him in the ensuing weeks of the Derby. Obviously Matz knew his horse better than anyone else, he brought him into this race perfectly and now has a very fresh horse for the final two legs of the Triple Crown chase.

Put me into the Blind pigs catagory. A quick story to prove it. A Gluebag I touted a month earlier came up on my horse watch for yesterday, and I almost forgot to bet it. Anyway, I remembered and after going to the track (remington) and placing My bet in the afternoon on the churchill races. I placed bets on the 6th at Hollywood. Had to play that damn Film Fortune since I liked him at Oaklawn. Anyway, I tried to play the 6 over the 1-3-14 but after putting in all my churchill picks, this Okie had a mouth so full of tobacco spit that the teller screwed up and gave me the 4 horse underneath instead of my pick the 14--wouldn't you know it-Film fortune came flying to catch that (60-1) 4 horse and like the blind Pig that I am, Found myself with a $400+ exacta 10 times. What a day on top Of the Oaks/Derby Double--talking about blind pigs finding nuts huh!!--Byanose

Congrats to Nick and Byanose and all the winners!!! I think Byanose needs to be buying some lottery tickets right away as long as this roll is going on! In all my years, I've never had one of those "the teller gave me the wrong tickets and I won big" stories. Or even a "the teller gave me the wrong tickets and I won a little" story. Of course, I do have a couple of stories of getting the wrong ticket and it cost me winning the race.

Alan, what is more ironic, Is that I double checked every churchill ticket, but the line behind me was getting restless and I did not bother with the Hollywood bets. I have picked winners before only to find I had not received my picks, so I usually check and checked all but the Hollywood, probable b/c the amount of wagers paled to churchill bets. Good luck today at Belmont. Byanose
